The present list refers to all goods of a chemical nature releasing powder (chrome and compounds, chloride and potassium sulphate, ammonium and calcium phosphates, ammonium and sodium nitrate, urea, sulphur - pyrite, carbon, silica sand, pre-reduced pellets, concentrates of metal sulphides, etc..)

Shortcomings of ship

Requires copy of the ship captain’s declaration on the state of the ship and checks of possible shortcomings;

Vehicle traffic

Check to see that the operational zone has been adequately marked out

Vehicle traffic

Before using, check that industrial vehicles have:

·      sufficient lighting, in particular for night-time work

·      sound alarm for reversing

·      a flashing yellow light

·      emergency brake

·      guards to protect the driver from violent impact against the good;

Ensure that no motor vehicle, including industrial vehicles, exceeds a speed of 20 km/h inside the operational zone or the area indicated in the company’s traffic flow plan.

Check that workers entered in the list of authorised and qualified personnel are chosen to handle mechanic hoisting equipment.

Overhead loads

Check that there are adequate operational spaces to protect workers against overhead loads

Check constantly to ensure that workers are never positioned below overhead loads or in the radius of action of industrial vehicles

 

 

Ensure the presence of the signalman on board the ship when the driver does not have a full view of the operational zone;

Operations that cannot be controlled on the ship

Check that all workers are some distance from the hold and relative decking during the opening/closing of the hatches

 

Check the absence of risks deriving from adjacent operations (on ship – quay);

Presence of dangerous substances

Ask for the safety data sheet;

 

Check that the instructions given on the sheets are complied with, with special reference to instructions on personal safety equipment and information to workers on indicated risks.

 

If it appears from safety data sheets that the load may release toxic or/and inflammable gases or impoverish oxygen content at access points and in the holds, agree upon access with the company’s PPO.

Adverse climatic conditions

In the event of excess wind or rain, after having consulted the company’s PPO, arrange suitable actions;

Dangers deriving from cleaning of the hold

When cleaning the hold with manual equipment (shovels, hoses, etc.) check that the following dangers are absent:

·      collapse of goods

·      sinking of goods

·      slipping of goods

·      falling of goods from bulkhead or skip

·      incorrect positioning because of an unstable work area, or due to the lifting of goods using equipment.

Fixed or portable ladders must in any case be available to ensure the immediate evacuation and rescue of workers.

Shortcomings of personal protection equipment

Check that whenever the hold floor is cleaned in the presence of industrial vehicles workers are supplied with and wear protection for the ears and airways at all times.

Report any PPE defects and cases of workers that fail to use them.......................

Incorrect behaviour of workers

Ensure that workers observe the following health rules.

·      They should not consume drinks or food during working shifts

·      They should not smoke

·      They should always wear gloves

 

Environmental pollution

 

Ensure that tarpaulin is placed over the area from the ship to the quay to prevent goods from falling into the sea for the following products - sulphur, pyrite, urea, nitrates, chloride and potassium sulphate.
